Batman Skycreeper Game Review
Batman is a well known and well loved property that spans many decades. His adventures started in comic books and soon went to other media, most notably, television movies and games, with many of them being critically acclaimed. One of such Batman games, Batman Skycreeper is based on one of the many critically acclaimed Batman incarnations- Batman the Animated series. It captures the look and feel of that popular show that any player, Batman fan or not, will appreciate.
In Batman Skycreeper, you play as Batman as he dodges construction materials and bombs from the Joker as he progresses upwards two very, very tall skyscrapers. On startup, you are introduced to Skycreeper with the wonderfully sweeping dreary music that have graced many versions of Batman. A lot of dark colours have been used in the games presentation to good effect, It ever feels overwhelming. It also looks cool when reading the instructions for the game and controls. The presentation is top notch, even though it would be nice to see images of the Joker and more frames at startup. The introduction would have been unforgettable if more work was placed into it.
The gameplay element is rather simple. There are five controls if you include the restart button. You really have to use the cursor keys. Up is to jump, left is to move left, right is to move right and down is; well, down. The Joker really has his hand on some huge pieces of construction material as he throws these obstacles toward you. The game is challenging and it takes a few minutes before it translates to fun. At first you will be gassed, blown up and squashed by these seemingly endless stuff Joker throws. After a while, you might realise that it takes some strategy and quick thinking to move up these buildings.
The concept of the game seems rock solid but a distracting factor is the game physics. It seems a bit too loosely defined and Batman moves more rigid than usual. Jumping from side to side to dodge these missiles and scaling up the buildings seem easy enough, but when caught between two slabs of rock and needing to make a quick escape from a bomb or another slab of rock you get killed, rather unnecessarily. It seems the game's concept of distance is a bit skewed. A couple of bugs were also noticed. You may find yourself stuck on a rock slab unable to jump. Not cool. As stated before, shots of the Joker were necessary. Some laughs even! Who knows that it's really the Joker throwing stuff until the very end?
Batman Skycreeper is an ambitious title and anything Batman related can be seen as ambitious. It has rather legendary pedigree in quality. This game is a fairly good flash game and whether you are a Batman fan or not it gives challenging gameplay. However, it possesses flawed physics and simple gameplay mechanics cannot save it from it not being an excellent flash game. It is entertaining but it felt too run- of -the mill, especially when playing Batman. Different gameplay elements should have been used also. Play it without very high expectations and you will be pleased.
